The life story of the famous New Zealand author Janet Frame. Her childhood is marked
by tragic events, two of her three sisters drown in separate incidents and her
only brother suffered from epilepsy. Janet takes refuge in reading. On her own and
after a suicide attempt, she voluntarily commits herself to a psychiatric hospital for
eight years, while starting to write and acquire growing notoriety.
JANE CAMPION
Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1954, Jane
Campion is a leading auteur director. She graduated
in Anthropology. After some experiments in theatre,
she is admitted at AFTRS, a famous Australian cinema
school. In 1975, she travels to Europe and studies
at the London Collage of Arts. Engaged by ABC
TV (Australia), she directs an episode of Dancing Daze,
before directing her first feature film: Two Friends (1986). Sweetie (1989), An Angel at My Table (1990)
insured her first success and with The Piano (1992)
she becomes the first (and only to date…) female
recipient of the Palme d’or award at the Cannes Film
Festival. The Portrait of a Lady (1996) and Holy Smoke
(1999) confirm her great talent. Retrospective of her
films at Créteil in 1999. |
