BATTAGLIA
by Daniela Zanzotto, Documentary, 58', 2004, Beta SP, ITALY

At the age of 37 Letizia Battaglia, from Palermo, decides to leave her husband whom she married when she was 16. She takes her three daughters with her and becomes a journalist, then a photographer, and she devotes herself to fight against the mafia. During the 70’s and the 80’s, the most violent period for Sicily, she goes on photographing. Blood-stained corpses, women and children driven mad by grief, Sicilians’ miserable conditions… Any of her black and white photos denounces injustice and violence. Daniela Zanzotto, aided by her camera, follows Letizia in her everyday life and collects her confidences.
