Rao Hui est un scénariste à succès pour des feuilletons à la télévision de Pékin. Son personnage principal Lin Hao, qui a son âge, tue sa petite amie et fuit vers le point le plus au Nord de la Chine, Mohe, un petit village réputé pour sa tranquillité et ses aurores boréales. Finalement, son producteur rejette son travail comme étant le pire scénario qu’il ait jamais lu. Il décide alors de réécrire son histoire en se fixant comme objectif de connaître réellement son personnage. Commence alors un long voyage qui le mènera à se comprendre lui-même. Entre le réel et l’imaginaire, entre le documentaire et la fiction, Xiaolu Guo qualifie son film de « Film Roman ».

Rao Hui is a successful, 33 year old, Beijing based, television script writer. His protagonist is a young man of similar age, Lin Hao, who kills his girlfriend in an argument and sets off towards the northernmost point of China, a village called Mohe, a place romanticised for its tranquillity and beautiful auroras. The producer finally rejects the work as “the worst script he had ever read”. Rao Hui decides to start the story again and throws himself into the task of “getting to know” Lin Hao. In the process begins a journey that leads him to understand himself.
