Poursuivie en Allemagne pour vol, Rita fuit en Belgique avec son bébé. Mais rapidement elle est arrêtée, déportée en Allemagne et mise en prison. Durant ce temps, ses quatre enfants sont chez sa mère qui tient un restaurant, mais a peu de temps à leur consacrer. Sortie de prison, Rita récupère ses enfants, contre la volonté de sa mère et forme une famille presque normale avec Marc, un soldat américain. Mais Rita reprend son rythme de vie antérieur où elle voit d’autres hommes et traîne dans les bars avec sa copine. Quand Marc annonce qu’il doit rentrer aux USA, la vie de Rita est déséquilibrée.

Rita flees to Belgium with her baby because she is wanted for theft in Germany. She is eventually arrested and deported to Germany where she’s put in jail. During this time, Rita's four other children live with Rita's mother who runs a restaurant and has little time for the children. Coming out from prison, Rita takes her children back again against the wishes of her mother. With the help of Marc – an American soldier – an almost normal family life develops. But Rita resumes her former lifestyle seeing other men and going out with a girlfriend. When Marc announces he has to go back in the USA, Rita's life is thrown off balance.
