Ce moyen métrage, réalisé sur commande du Parti Communiste italien, analyse la difficile condition des femmes, prises entre travail et patriarcat, tant au Nord qu’au Sud de l’Italie. En 1965, le film remporte le Prix spécial du Jury du Festival de Leipzig. En Italie, il ne se voit pas attribuer le visa de qualité, ce qui équivaut à en empêcher la diffusion. Pourtant, la presse en parle et Essere donne est projeté dans les sections du parti communiste.

This average length film, produced by order of the Italian Communist Party, analyzes the difficult situation of women, caught between labor and patriarchy, in both North and South of Italy. In 1965 the film won the Prix Special Jury of the Festival in Leipzig. In Italy, the film did not receive the endorsement of quality, which prevents it from being screened. Yet the press talks about it and Essere is showcased in the communist party sections.
