Bigger than Barbie

Plus de 500 femmes artistes oeuvrent au sein du Monkeybiz Bead Project à la confection de petites poupées vendues à travers le monde. Tourné principalement à Cape Town et dans les Townships, le film suit le parcours de ces femmes courageuses qui travaillent pour combattre à la fois l’extrême pauvreté et le virus du Sida par la pratique de l’art contemporain. Des ateliers de Khayelitsha aux grands magasins de New-York, nous suivons le voyage des poupées et rencontrons quelques-uns de leurs plus ardents défenseurs tels Desmond Tutu, la chanteuse Annie Lennox et Nelson Mandela.

The film features the 500 female artists of Monkeybiz Bead Project, making small dolls sold worldwide. Shot primarily in Cape Town, it shows these courageous women whoare working to overcome extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS through contemporary art.We follow the dolls on a fascinating journey from Africa to New York and meet Monkeybiz enthusiasts such as Desmond Tutu, singer Annie Lennox, and Nelson Mandela.
